ABOUT THE BOOK

Monsterland

Written by Michael Okon

Publisher’s Synopsis: Welcome to Monsterland—the scariest place on Earth.
Wyatt Baldwin’s senior year is not going well. His parents divorce, then his dad mysteriously dies. He’s not exactly comfortable with his new stepfather, Carter White, either. An ongoing debate with his best friends Melvin and Howard Drucker over which monster is superior has gotten stale. He’d much rather spend his days with beautiful and popular Jade. However, she’s dating the brash high-school quarterback Nolan, and Wyatt thinks he doesn’t stand a chance.

But everything changes when Wyatt and his friends are invited to attend the grand opening of Monsterland, a groundbreaking theme park where guests can interact with vampires in Vampire Village, be chased by werewolves on the River Run, and walk among the dead in Zombieville.

With real werewolves, vampires and zombies as the main attractions, what could possibly go wrong?

MY REVIEW

Being able to read an uncorrected proof was such a privilege. ( Book is not even available yet!)  You are literally on the hook before even hitting page 3 of the 219 page novel. Michael has done a phenomenal job of not only writing an amazing YA novel ; but he has managed to write like they used to write. Back in the 70's and 80's where purely by descriptive words your mind plays tricks on you in the most amazing way and your emotions are played with. You feel suspense, intrigue, and a sense of closeness with the characters. Just like you were with them on the journey as The NeverEnding Story .
I was also overcome with extreme disappointment. Not in terms as you would think but clearly for the fact that this was a book I was reading and not already a broke the box office movie I was watching. As this book deserves not only top of the New York Times best seller list but on the big screen as well. The moment I began to read my world was transformed and I was living through the novel.  You have to get your hands on this book, I can not express enough the talent in writing and descriptive elements.
Playing on aspects of the Monsters world with Paranormal undertones, this book is a sure bet for this Magickal Halloween season.
I have to admit from the hop ( and with out spoiling anything ) I became attached to Billy and the eagerness to follow through on his story alone was enough to have me reading despite all the other to many to count reasons you need this book in your life.
I also love how relatable Wayatt and his families situation is. I have to be vague as spoiling anything would be a complete dis-service  to this novel.
I will say though that the story line throughout is believable and you become one with every character even the "Monsters" in respect to the raw under side  of Human emotion at it's core. Every Monster was a human once in some right.
I can also say that Monsterland is right up my alley and I wish the entrance bracelet was real and I was off on my own adventure to such a real place. There is always room to let the imagination in.  Though without a doubt the way in which Monsterland came about and how the Werewolves, Zombies and Vampires came to be there is less than to be desired. ( not a spoiler but an intrigue for the "you have to read to find out) . There is always one of those kind of people.
I will leave you with the hope that you gift yourself or a loved one aged 14 + the gift of Monsterland.
I can not say you won't be disappointed ( in a good way) , as I was but in a compliment of extreme measure disappointment. but in terms of missing out on an amazing book then yes you would be.
