It seems as though right from your earliest age that you are taught, guided, or trained to follow an en-mass norm of how you should think and feel. In doing so, your individuality and free-thinking ability seem to get lost. Until, of course, you realize you can think for yourself, choose something different, or come across this brilliant book by Justine Avery: Think Outside The Box.
The world needs people to challenge our one size fits all thinking, and the perfect way to start is at a young age. To be clear, though, this book is perfect for young and old alike. Each page is written in a way to even challenge how you read by placing the sentences sporadic and intertwined with corresponding pictures. ( Super nod to Liuba for her amazing illustrations, they are the perfect complement to the book and its message.)
Think Outside the Box deals a hand of an 'AHA, wait a minute' moment as you read each page. You begin to realize how okay it is, not always to follow the norm set out as a medium. We do not all fit in the societal box anyway, so it is okay to fit outside the box as well.
I find that this book would be perfect for any child who sees themselves as different and maybe having a hard time. You could have an open conversation and help them realize that it is okay—to relish in their difference and ways of thinking. You never know what they could create for the world because of it. We are taught not to believe or agree with our thoughts—this book is a perfect reminder to do so.
To any adult in need of a new thought process and also in the right mind space for a slight change and acceptance, your A-HA moment awaits throughout the pages. This is a quick but thought-provoking read. I think it's the perfect addition to individually help with how the world seems to be responding to life in general right now.
This book is a perfect asset to have not only for young readers but as a daily reminder for adults as well. We are all navigating through uncharted waters right now, so why not 'Think Outside the Box' to navigate it?
