BEYOND THE BOOK ACTIVITY
The obvious choice of course is to have some kind of scavenger hunt yourself. There are a million options you can come up with. A way to get to know your town would be to search out special places, monuments or historic buildings in your town and go find them. You can learn about where you live and get in some exercise at the same time. You would be surprised at how many new things you can see if you look in a different way. Be more aware of what is around you.
Play an I Spy game. Create a list before you go out.
Make yourself a pretend camera out of construction paper. Decorate it as you wish. You want to make sure the lens area is big enough to see your picture in after. While out exploring look through the view finder and mentally take a picture of the most favorite thing/person etc you saw and when you get home draw the picture out and tape/glue behind your camera lens area. This gives you a memory keepsake of your walk about. (from Idea Exchange)
You could also grab a bunch of stuff from around the house and make some DIY instruments following the theme to the scavenger hunt. Try to dig around the recycle box and repurpose some cardboard or paper towel rolls etc.
